Chapman’s Peak Drive Closed until Further Notice

2 March 2015

The Chapman’s Peak Drive and Toll Plaza are closed until further notice. Travelling through the drive has become dangerous due to the fire that has been raging in the vicinity of Noordhoek.

The fire destroyed a number of interceptive fences and damaged a number of public toilets along the drive. The boardwalk on the seaside of the plaza has been completely destroyed.

The plaza building has not been damaged although small fires are still burning in the vicinity of the plaza. Fire-fighting teams of Entilini, the concessionaire managing the drive on behalf of the Western Cape Government, are fighting those fires.

The drive will remain closed until comprehensive geological tests of the soil above the drive have been conducted. The tests are necessary to determine the extent of soil erosion that could cause rock falls. Sporadic fires are still burning on the mountain above the Chapman’s Peak Drive.
