Cape Town sports federations receive a R4.8 million cash injection

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) invested R4.8 million in the promotion and development of Cape Town sports on Wednesday 10 April 2019, when a cheque handover ceremony was held in Pinelands.

A total of 49 different Cape Town-based sports federations - some local and some provincial - received funding of between R10 000 and R100 000. The funds will be used to cover the day to day costs of the organisations, and for the hosting of major sports events in Cape Town.

Minister Anroux Marais delivered the keynote speech at the event, highlighting the important role that sports play in the lives of children and young adults. 

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation at DCAS, encouraged the federations to ensure that they comply with all the requirements when they apply for funding from DCAS.

Western Cape (WC) Transplant Sports Association Western Province (WP) Badminton Association, WP Natural Bodybuilding Union, WP Bowls Association, Baseball Association of WP, Cape Town (CT) Bridge Union, CT Metro Open Boxing Organisation, Chess WP, WP Cycling Association, WP Majorette and Cheerleading Association, WP Fancy Pigeons Federation, SA Figure Skating WP, WP Fly Fishing Association, WP Golf Union (Men), WP Hockey Union, WP Ice Hockey Association, CT Judo Association, Lifesaving WP, WP Netball Union, WP Pool Union, CT Softball Association, WP Surfing, CT Table Tennis, WP Toutrek Vereniging, WP Volleyball Union, WP Weightlifting Association, Women's Golf WP, WP Wrestling Association, CT Metro Aquatics, CT Unicity Region Equestrian Federation, CT Ringball, WP Metro Canoeing, SAFA CT, WP Black Powder Association, WP Sport Aerobic and Fitness Federation, CT Hunting Rifle Shooting, WC Climbing Metropole District Counsel NPO, WP Rugby Football Union, WP Sport Association for the Physically Disabled, CT Darts, WP Squash, CT Fencing, WP Model Aerobatic Association, WP Klawerjas Association, WP Tennis, WP Modern Pentathlon, CT Gymnastics Association, SA Air Rifle Western Province and Western Province Athletics.

The cheque handover is the culmination of a process during which DCAS considers sports federations for funding.  

Wednesday night’s ceremony was the third for 2019 and saw the total amount of funding allocated to sports organisations reach over R7.5 million. 

Over R1.8 million was allocated to sports federations in the Cape Winelands region on 4 April 2019, while R900 000 was issued to federations in the Overberg on 9 April. The next handover, for West Coast federations, will take place on 17 April in Moorreesburg.
