Cape Town Residents can have their say about Green Point Urban Park

Residents across the metropolitan area will have a chance to comment on plans for the proposed redevelopment of Green Point Common, site of the new multi-purpose stadium to be built in time for 2010 World Cup.

A series of eleven public meetings will be held from tonight, 29 March until 25 May 2007 to give residents images and information about the plans for the sports and recreation precinct. Information packs will also be available at City libraries and members of the public will have until 25 May to comment.

Tonight's meeting at the Rebecca van Amsterdam Hall in Atlantis, will start at 18:00 and end at 21:00. Other meetings are:

The public's comments at the meeting and via other channels will be recorded in a report which the City of Cape Town has to submit to the Provincial MEC of the Environment, Planning AND Economic Development by 6 July 2007. The public participation process and the report are requirements in the MEC's Record of Decision issued on 5 January 2007 when she gave environmental authorisation for the building of the new stadium on a portion of Green Point Common on the site of the Metropolitan Golf Course.

The urban park concept plan will be explained at the public meetings. It will show the proposed park, a consolidated sports precinct (for cricket, rugby, soccer, tennis, golf, bowls and athletics) and a public pedestrian network linking the historic Mouille Point Lighthouse headquarters on the beachfront promenade through to the historic Fort Wynyard.

A display at each venue will contain aerial photographs, conceptual drawings, and plans. These will cover the history, uses of and proposals for Green Point urban park located on the Common. The size of the Green Point Common sports, park and recreation area will also be compared with other park areas in the metropolitan area.

A visual presentation will be given at each public meeting, and questions from the audience will be answered by subject experts from the City and consultants. An independent facilitator will run the meetings. Minutes will be taken and members of the public can also use data-sheets to record their specific comments. Advertisements with details of the meetings will appear in community and daily newspapers of the city.
