Cape Lime Donates R500 000 for Mobile Clinic to bring Health Services to Farms

22 August 2014

Western Cape Government Health in the Langeberg area accepted a generous donation from Cape Lime (Pty) Ltd. The donation of a new mobile clinic to the value of R500 000 will make a huge difference to the accessibility of healthcare services to the farm workers who live and work in the area that surrounds the Cape Lime Factory outside Robertson.

Mobile services deliver approximately 98% of the health services to farm workers who in turn are almost entirely dependent on mobile services for the delivery of preventative and chronic treatment. The mobile clinics deliver a comprehensive health service that includes Women’s Health, Mother and Baby care, Chronic Disease Management, and Child and Nutritional Health.

Dr Lizette Phillips, Director for the Cape Winelands District, applauded the dedication that mobile sisters display in their daily work, stating that "these nurses see anywhere between 40 to 60 patients daily, and offer a full complement of primary healthcare services. They deserve to do so in a reliable and patient-friendly environment."

In their hand over speech, Helmut Pool, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Cape Lime said,  “Thanks to you as a department for making it easy to be a part of this project, that will add such value to the community.”

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, said: “One of the reasons for the success in addressing the challenge of bringing health services closer to the people, is that the private sector is stepping out and making significant contributions, such as the donation by Cape Lime”. He went on to say “It is not so much about the once-off contribution, but the ripple effect that the mobile clinic will have on the lives of the community in the Robertson farming area. The service impacts on the health and wellness of the larger community. This is what we mean when we talk about our government's strategic objective of creating wellness.”

Private Public Partnerships, where the private sector contributes in supporting government services, go a long way in augmenting service delivery to all members of the public.

The Western Cape Government in the Cape Winelands District has 38 mobile clinics that deliver services to farm workers. Farm health posts also offer basic preventative and adherence services, home-based care and health promotion. In this way Western Cape Government Health is continually improving access to healthcare in rural areas.
