Call for nominations - Provincial Safety Advisory Committee

Call for nominations for NGO representative vacancy in the Provincial Safety Advisory Committee

The Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, is calling on members of the public to nominate suitable persons for the non-governmental organisation (NGO) vacancy in the Provincial Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC). The purpose of the committee is to advise the Provincial Minister of Community Safety on matters related to safety and policy.

The appointment to PSAC is made in terms of section 25 of the  Western Cape Community Safety Act, 2013 (Act 3 of 2013) (the “WCCSA”). In terms of Section 26(1) of the WCCSA, the Provincial Minister of Community Safety must appoint the members of the provincial PSAC. The PSAC must consist of five members, namely:

  1. A representative of the business community;
  2. A member of the judiciary, the Cape Bar or the Cape Law Society;
  3. A senior member of an academic institution with experience in the field of criminology;
  4. A representative from an NGO involved in policing or related areas (vacant); and
  5. The Head of the Provincial Department of Community Safety as ex officio member. 

Minister Fritz said, “In line with section 26(3) of the WCCSA, I invite all interested parties to submit the names of persons who in their opinion are fit and proper persons to be appointed as a member of the Western Cape PSAC for purposes of filling the NGO representative vacancy.”

Minister Fritz added, “The functions of the Committee are to advise and make recommendations to assist me in my capacity as the Provincial Minister of Community Safety with:

  1. the functions of the Province of the Western Cape in terms of Chapter 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (“the Constitution”), and Chapter 8 of the Constitution of the Western Cape, 1997 (Act 1 of 1998) (“the Western Cape Constitution”);
  2. strategies, policies, budgets and annual performance plans in respect of the functions in terms of Chapter 11 of the Constitution and Chapter 8 of the Western Cape Constitution;
  3. regulations in terms of the WCCSA that may be necessary; or
  4. any other matter arising from the application of the WCCSA.”
