Busy Bees Victorious at Women’s Rugby Tournament

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) along with the Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) and the City of Cape Town (CoCT) hosted a Women’s Rugby Tournament in Langa from 28 – 29 September 2014. This tournament, which is in its fourth year, will be hosted annually due to the growth of woman’s rugby in the Western Cape. The Minister of DCAS, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, also attended and she congratulated the players on their achievements. 

The ladies did their best on the field and the competition was fierce but the Busy Bees from Langa claimed victory after winning the senior category and ending  second in the under-18 category on their home grounds. “The Busy Bees team showed a lot of potential, with some of their players representing South Africa in the National Woman’s Rugby Team” says Nonceba Mpashe from DCAS Club Development. The winners of the tournament are as follows:

Seniors
1st  Busy Bees
2nd Union Milnerton
3rd KWARU from Port Elizabeth

Under 18
1st St Georges
2nd Busy Bees
3rd Strand Pioneers

The aim of this tournament is to increase awareness of women’s rugby in the communities of the Western Cape. This tournament brought together different cultures and placed emphasis on the importance of women’s sport.
