Batavia School of Skills wins third prize at road safety competition

7 October 2017

Three schools represented the Western Cape at the National Participatory Educational Technique Competition in Rustenburg, North West from 2 to 7 October 2017.

Officials from the Department of Transport and Public Works accompanied learners and representatives from the following schools:

  • Nomzamo High School represented the province in the urban category,
  • Groenberg Secondary in the rural category, and
  • Batavia School of Skills (SOS) represented the province in the category for people with disabilities.

Batavia SOS won third prize in its category. The team comprised Mujahid Abrahams, Latiefa Adonis, Xolani Yamani, Dylan Paulse, and Saundre Europa. Etienne de Villiers, one of the deputy principals at the school accompanied the learners.

The Participatory Educational Technique competition was conceptualised by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in 2003, after analysis of the road accident statistics of 2002. It was found that most fatalities involved young road users (18-25 years) and it was against this background that the RTMC introduced the projects because young road users were not adequately targeted through the existing interventions.

It requires Grade 11 learners to identify dangerous conditions around their school and communities. Through research those learners need to come up with solutions to address those dangers. The learners represent their research and findings at the National Competition. They also use scale models to show to adjudicators how changes would be made to the areas surrounding the school.
