Active Seniors Shine at Eden Regional Golden Games

28 May 2014

Hundreds of senior citizens, or “mature citizens” as they prefer to be called, brought their sporting and competitive prowess to the annual Eden Regional Golden Games in Oudtshoorn on 27 May 2014. The games were hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

A lively procession of competitors excited the crowd before the games began. Participants from communities in Mossel Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, George, Ladismith, Zoar and Calitzdorp competed in the various fun-filled games on the day. Track and field events, as well as goal-shoot, pass-the-ball and “ring the stick” were on offer. The best athletes from this event will represent their region at the Provincial Golden Games in August.

Jean Neethling of DCAS said the event was a success. “Participants had fun on the day and showed off their sporting skills with enthusiasm. They also danced along with the music. I’m confident that they had a memorable day, made friendships and have stories to tell their grandchildren at home.”

The Eden Games showed the commitment by DCAS and its partners to create conditions for our seniors to actively participate in sport and live healthy lifestyles. Their enthusiasm for play and having fun brings warmth to communities that proudly value them. DCAS will be hosting similar regional games events in the Metropole, Cape Winelands, West Coast, Central Karoo and Overberg in the coming weeks.
