Your FREE RIDE to opportunity

Getting YOU to Work, the Western Cape Government’s Jobseeker Travel Voucher Programme, is expanding!

The programme was launched in February 2024 to help unemployed jobseekers find work. As of May 2025, the programme has reached 3000+ jobseekers with the support of 150+ partner employers, and nearly half of the surveyed voucher users found employment.

The earlier version of the programme allowed jobseekers to benefit only via an employer who nominated them to benefit from the programme. The new version introduces Beneficiary Self-Registration and will continue to work with partners to ensure maximum reach and impact.

Therefore, Jobseekers can now register directly on the Online Portal to receive a voucher and take the first step towards new opportunities and brighter futures.

•    Be unemployed;
•    Have a valid South African ID, and
•    Be registered on the Online Portal or be registered by an employer.

How does it work?

The voucher allows jobseekers to search for work and travel to and from interviews in the Cape Town metro, for free, using Golden Arrow Bus Services. Follow the simple steps below:

STEPS

When can I travel:
Monday to Friday – between 9am and 3pm.

GABS operates an extensive service across the Cape Town metro. Visit the GABS website www.gabs.co.za or call 0800 65 64 63 for further details on their services.

How can EMPLOYERS, NGOs or NPOs get involved?

Organisations can partipcate by registering on the portal and can then load up eligible jobseekers to benefit from the programme. Potential employees or interview candidates can then travel for free to interviews scheduled by the employer.  Businesses, NPOs and NGOs operating in Cape Town must be:
•    registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), Department of Social Development, or as a public entity; and
•    actively recruiting or facilitating recruitment of unemployed jobseekers in Cape Town.

If you meet these simple requirements and want to partner with us click here now to register on the Online Portal.

Why free travel?

Getting YOU to Work is part of the Western Cape Government’s Growth 4 Jobs Strategy, through which we are doing everything we can to grow the provincial economy, create jobs, and tackle unemployment, which currently stands at 20%.

The high cost of transport is a major barrier reported by unemployed jobseekers looking for work, and recent increases in fuel prices and public transport fares have made this even more difficult. Providing free travel vouchers removes this barrier, helping jobseekers find the work they so desperately need.
