Public Transport in the Western Cape

Traffic congestion in the Western Cape, particularly in the City of Cape Town, has become a daily reality for thousands of commuters. Motorists lose an average of 94 hours a year sitting in traffic, while congestion continues to worsen due to increased vehicle ownership and migration close to business hubs for better job opportunities. The result? Higher travel costs, lost time, and increased pressure on our roads, economy, and environment.

Building more roads is also not the answer. More roads often lead to more cars, and ultimately, more congestion.

With this in mind, one of the key solutions is the increased use of public transport, where we are able to move more people while using fewer vehicles.

While government and its stakeholders are working to strengthen and improve public transport systems across the province, public transport remains one of the key solutions to alleviating congestion.

Why choose public transport?

Making the switch isn’t just good for the system, it’s good for you too. Benefits of public transport use includes:

  • Saved time: Dedicated bus lanes and priority routes can help you move faster than peak-hour traffic
  • Saved money: Spend less on fuel, parking, and vehicle maintenance
  • Reduce stress: Avoid the frustration of sitting in traffic every day
  • Be more productive: Use your commute time to read, plan, or simply relax
  • Protect the environment: Fewer cars mean lower emissions and cleaner air
  • Support your community: A stronger public transport system benefits everyone

Public transport is not just an alternative, it’s a smarter, more sustainable way to move.

Be part of the solution

Congestion is a shared challenge, and small changes can make a big difference. By choosing public transport where possible, you’re helping to reduce traffic, lower costs, and build a more connected and efficient Western Cape.

One choice can change your commute, and your city.
