Western Cape Mobility Department to mark inaugural World Public Transport Day

On 17 April 2026, the Western Cape Mobility Department will mark the inaugural World Public Transport Day with an activation engaging commuters across various modes of public transport.

World Public Transport Day recognises the vital role of public transport in connecting residents to jobs, education, and essential services, and bringing communities closer together. This aligns with the Department’s vision of a high-quality, integrated public transport system that provides inclusive access to opportunities. This includes restoring rail as the backbone of the transport system, formalising and improving minibus taxi services, expanding bus rapid transit and quality bus services, improving rural connectivity, and integrating all modes of public transport.

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku, together with departmental officials and transport partners, will engage with commuters and public transport operators on the role of public transport in reducing congestion and improving mobility across the province. Minister Sileku will also take a train ride with commuters after 08h00.

Media are invited to attend. There will be opportunities for photographs and interviews.
