Nearly 1 800 George residents sign up for free Jobseeker Travel Voucher Programme
The Western Cape Government's Jobseeker Travel Voucher Programme is helping unemployed residents in George get to job opportunities without transport costs getting in the way.
Since the programme launched on 25 and 26 June 2026, 1 766 unemployed residents have registered, and 1 083 free trips have already been taken on the GO GEORGE bus service. The programme gives qualifying jobseekers free bus travel to attend job interviews, submit job applications and look for work.
The response has been encouraging. During the two-day launch, 368 residents registered and 330 GO GEORGE smart cards were issued. Registrations have continued to grow, with nearly 1 800 residents now signed up. More residents are also using the service every week. Weekly trips have increased from about 100 trips during the launch week to more than 360 trips in a single week.
"The steady increase in the number of trips taken each week shows the real difference this programme is making in the lives of unemployed residents. For many jobseekers, the cost of travelling to interviews or submitting job applications is one of the biggest barriers to finding work. Through this initiative, we are removing that barrier by providing free access to public transport. This means more residents can reach opportunities they may otherwise have had to miss,” said Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku
Transport costs can make it difficult for unemployed residents to look for work. By removing this cost, the programme helps more people travel to employment opportunities they may otherwise not have been able to access.
Unemployed residents in George who are actively looking for work are encouraged to register for the Jobseeker Travel Voucher Programme and make use of the free bus travel available to support their job search.
