Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, attended the launch today of Codeta’s new cashless payment system in Khayelitsha, describing it as an important step in modernising the minibus taxi industry.

The pilot starts on 1 June and runs on two routes: Site C (Khayelitsha) to Killarney and Mfuleni to Killarney. Instead of paying with cash, passengers will now use digital cards that are scanned when they get into taxis.

Codeta has also introduced cheaper fares for scholars, pensioners, and residents travelling to hospitals or clinics. These groups will get a R10 discount to make travel more affordable for those who use public transport often or need it most.

Minister Sileku said he has been calling for taxi operations to go cashless, explaining that it improves safety, reduces the risks linked to handling cash, and makes travel faster and more convenient. “This is a practical step towards a safer and more efficient public transport system,” he said.

He acknowledged Codeta and its partners for leading the change and said it puts commuters first. “For too long, passengers have had to deal with cash in crowded taxis. This innovation will improve that experience,” he said.

Minister Sileku encouraged other taxi associations to follow Codeta’s example and adopt similar systems to improve service delivery.

He also noted that passengers and drivers may need time to adjust as the system is tested during busy travel periods.

The Western Cape Mobility Department will monitor the pilot closely as part of efforts to modernise and improve the minibus taxi industry.
