Minister Sileku welcomes Cabinet approval of 10-year driving licence validity

Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, has welcomed Cabinet's approval to extend the validity period of driving licence cards for light motor vehicles (Codes A, A1, B and EB) from five to 10 years.

Minister Sileku said the decision will make life easier for motorists and reduce pressure on driving licence testing centres. 

"We welcome this long-awaited decision. It means motorists will not have to renew their driving licence cards as often, while our driving licence testing centres will have more time to improve service delivery. For the Western Cape, this is an opportunity to reduce pressure on our centres, shorten waiting times, and provide a better service to residents."

He noted that the current renewal periods for heavy commercial vehicles, public transport vehicles and Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs) will remain unchanged because of the additional safety requirements for these vehicles. 

Minister Sileku reminded motorists that the change is not yet in effect. 

"The law must first be amended before the 10-year validity period can be introduced. Until then, motorists must continue renewing their driving licence cards under the current five-year system."

He further called on the national Department of Transport to finalise the legal process and provide clarity on when the changes will take effect.
