Minister Sileku thanks traffic officers for keeping Western Cape roads safe during severe weather

Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, has thanked the province’s traffic officers for their dedication and hard work during the severe weather conditions experienced over the past week.

Heavy rain and flooding caused damage to infrastructure and led to several road closures across the province. Despite the difficult and dangerous conditions, traffic officers remained on duty managing traffic, assisting motorists, monitoring flooded roads, and helping to keep residents safe.

“While many residents were advised to stay indoors or avoid certain routes, our traffic officers remained on the ground in difficult conditions to assist road users and support emergency operations. I thank them for their commitment and service during this challenging period,” said Minister Sileku.

During the past week (11–17 May), traffic officers arrested 40 individuals for various offences, including 28 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Among those arrested was a man in Brackenfell on Wednesday after officers found him in possession of 1 076 bundles of Khat with an estimated value of R22 596. On Friday, a man was arrested in Ashton after being found driving a stolen vehicle. On Saturday, a man was arrested in Grabouw after allegedly attempting to bribe a traffic officer with R50 during a routine traffic stop.

Tragically, 17 fatal crashes were recorded during the week, resulting in 20 fatalities, including 9 pedestrians, 6 drivers, 4 passengers, and a motorcyclist.

Enforcement outcomes:

  • 4 688 fines issued for driver and vehicle fitness offences
  • 135 speeding offences recorded
  • 82 unroadworthy vehicles removed from service
  • 4 vehicles impounded

“Every traffic officer on duty is working to help prevent crashes and save lives. We will continue to enforce the law, remove unsafe drivers and vehicles from our roads, and prioritise the safety of all road users. With the upcoming pay day weekend, we appeal to residents not to drink and drive and to make responsible decisions for their own safety and the safety of others,” added Minister Sileku.
