Engagement in Haarlem

Minister Sileku confirms progress towards GO GEORGE link for Uniondale and Haarlem

Western Cape Minister of Mobility Isaac Sileku visited Uniondale and Haarlem on Saturday, 3 October 2026, as the Department moves towards introducing a GO GEORGE bus connection between these communities and George.

The visit formed part of October Mobility Month and provided an opportunity for the Minister and senior officials to engage directly with residents about their transport needs and the work undertaken to establish the proposed connection.

The preparatory work for the proposed GO GEORGE connection has been concluded. The next steps will focus on finalising the remaining operational and administrative arrangements, which will determine the official rollout of the new service.

For residents of Uniondale and Haarlem, the connection will provide an important additional public transport option to George, improving access to employment, education, healthcare and other essential services.

“No community should be left behind because of where they live. My visit to Uniondale and Haarlem today was about listening first-hand. The residents here are resilient, but they are spending too much of their hard-earned money just to get to work or to take their children to school.

A GO GEORGE connection for Uniondale and Haarlem is not just about a bus, it is about dignity, access to jobs, and growing our local economy. We are looking at a model that is affordable for residents, financially sustainable, and that works together with existing operators. We will do the technical work, but our intent is clear and that is to connect these communities in a real, economical way to George,” said Minister Sileku.

The Western Cape Mobility Department will now proceed with the remaining steps required for implementation, including finalising operational arrangements and confirming the requirements and timelines for the rollout.

Engagement with local communities, minibus taxi operators and other relevant stakeholders will continue as the process moves towards implementation.

Minister Sileku thanked residents in Uniondale and Haarlem for their engagement and for sharing their experiences.
