Touwsrivier Community Turns Out for Thusong Outreach
Touwsrivier, 8 October 2026: Residents of Touwsrivier are turning out in large numbers as the Western Cape Government Department of Local Government hosts a two-day Thusong Outreach in the community from 7 to 8 October 2026.
The turnout reflects the community’s interest in accessing a range of government services and information available at one venue. Government departments and service providers are on site to assist residents with enquiries, provide advice and connect them with relevant programmes and support.
Touwsrivier is a historic railway town in the Breede Valley Municipality. Its location can make access to different government service points less convenient for residents. The Thusong Outreach addresses this by creating a central access point within the community.
Residents are able to engage directly with officials and access information on government services, employment and skills opportunities, social support and other programmes. The outreach also provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions and receive guidance based on their individual needs.
By bringing multiple services together at a single venue, the outreach saves residents the need to visit different offices and helps make the process of accessing government support more convenient.
The Thusong Programme is designed to provide integrated, people centred government services to rural and underserved communities. Recent Thusong outreaches across the Western Cape assisted 2,349 residents and facilitated 4,443 government services, highlighting the reach of this approach.
The Touwsrivier outreach continues today, 8 October, with residents accessing services and engaging with government officials and service providers throughout the day.
The initiative demonstrates the value of creating accessible platforms where communities can connect with government, obtain information and access services in a convenient and coordinated way.
