Thusong Programme engagement strengthens Integrated Service Delivery in Central Karoo

On 4 and 5 March 2026 the Department of Local Government hosted a two-day Thusong Programme engagement in Beaufort West, in the Central Karoo District, bringing together municipalities and public entities from across the province to share best practices and strengthen coordinated service delivery.

As the country prepares for the upcoming Local Government Elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), as the custodian of the electoral process, presented contemporary strategies, including digitization initiatives, aimed at increasing electoral participation, particularly among young people.  The IEC further clarified the distinction between the declaration and the announcement of elections and the respective authorities responsible for these processes.

Since 10 April 2010, the Thusong Programme has been managed by the Service Delivery Integration Directorate within the Department of Local Government. This transition strengthened the programme’s strategic role as a key platform for integrated government service delivery, aligned with national development priorities and the Batho Pele principles that place citizens at the centre of public services.

To support this mandate, the Directorate established the Thusong Programme Forum, a high-level platform that brings together national and provincial departments as well as local municipalities. The Forum promotes collaboration, integrated planning, information sharing, and capacity building across spheres of government.

Through initiatives such as this engagement, the Thusong Programme continues to advance cooperative governance and improve access to responsive government services for communities.
