The Department of Infrastructure’s (DOI) Gamza Meyer, Deputy Director in the Immovable Asset Management: Property, Planning and Information directorate, was awarded the prestigious Asset Management Individual Achievement Award at the Southern African Asset Management Association (SAAMA) awards held in KwaZulu-Natal on 11 and 12 June 2025.

The annual SAAMA awards recognise achievements and contributions in Infrastructure Asset Management. Other categories include the Young Asset Management Practitioner Award and the Project Achievement Award.

“My role has been to act as a bridge between policy intent and practical implementation, ensuring that the programme not only improves efficiency but also supports the WCG’s commitment to service delivery excellence,” says Gamza.

Gamza is not only the business lead in the assessment of practices based on the ISO/SANS 55000 series for asset management standards, but he is also recognised for the development and improvement of the DOI’s Custodian Asset Management Plan (C-AMP) and the management of the Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) Programme.

“Gamza was nominated for the Asset Management Individual Achievement Award due to his catalytic role in the Asset Management Practice Improvement Programme within DOI,” says Brett Blackburn, Chief Director: Immovable Asset Management (IAM). “This role has demanded knowledge and skills in managing internal and external stakeholders, while ensuring regulatory compliance as well as performance improvement.”

DOI is the custodian of the Western Cape Government’s immovable asset portfolio which includes land and buildings. The Department endeavours to develop, implement and maintain the institutional strategy and systems for asset management and development.

“In 2024 the Chief Directorate: Immovable Asset Management adopted the ‘asset lifecycle’ diagram as a strategic symbol, referred to as our “North Star”, to further institutionalise infrastructure asset management good practice in the department,” says Brett.

The ‘asset lifecycle’ strategic “North Star” symbol is used to promote the importance of integration, coordination and collaboration amongst the IAM Directorates and with external stakeholders.
