Smalblaar Bridge recovery update

The Western Cape Government continues to prioritise the recovery of the Rawsonville bridge over the Smalblaar River (MR298/Van Riebeeck Street) following the flood damage.

Key updates: 

• The bridge remains closed until further notice.
• The detailed design phase is nearing completion.
• Contract documentation is being finalised in parallel to fast-track procurement, subject to the necessary approvals.
• The project will involve the demolition and replacement of four damaged bridge deck spans to safely restore access.
• Site establishment is currently anticipated for September 2026, subject to approvals, contractor appointment and prevailing conditions.
• The bridge is expected to reopen approximately six months after construction commences, with additional finishing works to follow.

We recognise the significant inconvenience this closure has caused residents, businesses and road users. 

Restoring this vital transport link remains a high priority as part of the Western Cape Government's flood recovery programme.
