Media Release by Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers

A R262 million 16-month Department of Infrastructure (DOI) contract with Roadmac Surfacing Cape to undertake periodic maintenance and repairs on a total of 60km of divisional and trunk roads in the Breede River Municipality near Worcester will be completed on 7 October 2026. Current works are complete, and the contractor is attending to final snags. The affected roads are TR30/2 (the R60), TR31/1 (the R43), DR1347, DR1379, DR1400 (Nuy Vallei Road) and DR1377.

These roads were last resurfaced between 1995 and 2013 and patching, base repairs, rut filling, crack sealing and edge break repairs were necessary in places. The gravel shoulders of certain roads were eroded. Guardrails were in poor condition, certain road signs needed to be replaced, and sections of fencing were badly damaged or missing. In addition, MR0298 and the R60 were severely damaged by flooding.

All pavement defects were repaired before resealing took place. A 2km portion of Nuy Vallei Road was upgraded from a gravel road to a surfaced road. Subsurface drains, side drains and erosion protection works were built in certain places. Fencing was repaired or installed. Flood protection was installed in places. Guardrails and asphalt beams were installed. Repairs were undertaken to roads and bridges in the project area.

“I am proud that certain large contracts with my Department create work for local labourers as well as economic opportunities for targeted enterprises, local enterprises and emerging contractors”, said Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers. “Roadmac used a total of 29 093 person-days of local labour on this contract against a target of 27 014; 355 work opportunities were created against a target of 200; R92.4 million of goods and services came from targeted enterprises against a target of R51.5 million; and 16 local enterprises benefitted from the work on these roads against a target of ten. In addition, eight emerging contractors were awarded subcontracts. These repairs to road infrastructure in the Breede Valley show that we maintain our existing infrastructure to boost economic growth in the Western Cape,” he added.
