State of the Province Address 2021

Premier Alan Winde delivering his SOPAOn Wednesday 17 February, Premier Alan Winde delivered the State of the Province Address at the Emil Weder High School Hall, 1 Hartzenberg Avenue, Genadendal, at 9:30am.

The debate on the SOPA, and the Premier’s reply to the debate, commenced on Thursday, 18 February 2021, at 1:45pm, at the same venue.

“As a province, we have worked hard to lead from the front, to deliver services, and to use new and innovative ways to do it. My promise to the people of the Western Cape is that this government will continue to lead, to promote dignity, to create jobs and to make this province a safer place for everyone who lives in it.” said Premier Alan Winde.

During the State of the Province Address, the Premier outlined the Western Cape Government's focus areas over the next year:

  • Covid-19 response
  • Johnson and Johnson trials
  • Jobs and the economy
  • Safety
  • Dignity and wellbeing

What is the State of the Province Address (SOPA)?

  • The State of the Province Address is a speech made by the Premier or provincial head.
  • The event usually marks the official opening of the Provincial Parliament.
  • The speech is delivered in front of members of the provincial executive, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and the Secretary.

Who can attend?

This year the State of the Province Address was held at the Emil Weder High School Hall in Genadendal. Only invited guests could attend. In line with COVID regulations in respect of public gatherings, a maximum of 50 persons were allowed in the venue.
