Western Cape honours nurses on International Nurses’ Day

12 May 2026

On International Nurses’ Day, the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness joins the global community in recognising the dedication, skill, and compassion of nurses under the 2026 theme: “Our nurses. Our future. Empowered nurses save lives.”

Nurses are at the heart of person-centred care. They are often the first voice of reassurance, the steady hand in moments of uncertainty, and the bridge between patients, families, communities, and the wider health system.

Across WCDHW, 12 837 nurses play a vital role in helping residents start well, live well, and age well, while strengthening a health system that must be run well to meet the needs of the people we serve. We recognise our nursing colleagues not only as caregivers, but as leaders, educators, advocates, and essential partners in building a stronger health ecosystem.

Nurses are the largest professional groups in the public health system and this reflects the scale of their contribution across hospitals, clinics, community-based services, emergency care, specialist services, and public health programmes.

"On International Nurses Day, we honour the nurses who are at the heart of healthcare in the Western Cape. Every day, often under immense pressure, our nurses do their very best to care for patients with dignity and compassion. With the current severe weather conditions, nurses across the province are once again stepping up to support and care for communities when they need it most. Today, I encourage every resident to thank a nurse and recognise the extraordinary difference they make in our communities every single day," said Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness, Mireille Wenger.

The WCDHW extends its sincere gratitude to every nurse serving the people of the Western Cape. Your care saves lives. Your leadership strengthens the system. Your compassion helps make access to healthcare a reality for all.
