Definitions for government terms, listed alphabetically.
Habitat - The environment and area where a plant or animal usually lives.
Hansard - The word-for-word minutes of parliamentary debates and sittings.
Health care workers - People who care for the sick, including qualified nurses and doctors, mental health professionals and carers who don't have formal qualifications.
Health professionals - People with formal qualifications that care for the sick, such as nurses, doctors, psychiatrists and other specialists.
Health-care waste - Refuse produced by health-care facilities that needs to be disposed of without causing harm to the community.
High Court - Courts that hear serious cases like rape and murder and cases involving more than R100 000. The High Court also hears appeals from the Magistrates' Court.
Higher education - Education after secondary or high school, including training at Universities and Technikons. Also called Tertiary education. Includes all training that leads to an NQF qualification that is higher than Grade 12.
Histopathology - Study of microscopic changes in bodily tissues caused by disease.
HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus
HIV/Aids - The HI virus attacks the immune system. It causes people to be vulnerable to other diseases such as TB or pneumonia. When the HIV positive person's immune system is so weak that they become ill, they are said to have AIDS.
Home-based care - Looking after a sick person in their home. Many ill people cannot be accommodated in hospitals and so receive treatment and care at home.
Horticulturists - Science of cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers or other plants.
Hospitality industry - The sector of the tourism industry that focuses on providing accommodation, food and beverages.
Housing code - National guidelines on housing subsidies including detailed information on how to apply for the various subsidies.
Human Resources (HR) - Human Resource management or Personnel Management involves the management of employees. It includes hiring, training and developing skills.
Human Rights - The rights that all people share by virtue of the fact that they are human. They include the right to be free, the right to privacy, the right to vote and the right not to be unfairly discriminated against. The human rights set out in the South African Constitution are protected by law.
Hydroponic farming - Crop farming by growing plants in nutrient solution instead of soil.
Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) - The format used for web pages. It can also be used in email when it's important to include pictures or different fonts and colours.
Hypertension - High blood pressure.
