Better Living Challenge

better living

better living insideThe Better Living Challenge is a project of the Western Cape Government's 110% Green initiative. Its theme is "Green economy working for the poor."

It aims to address the growing housing backlog. Because of the significant population growth, government wants to find alternatives for RDP houses as the main solution to provide housing on serviced sites. The challenge is to use design to develop sustainable housing solutions that improve lives, are affordable and offer people choices. With the Better Living Challenge, government wants to gather new and existing products, systems and services for low-income home improvement.

The aim is to ensure great ideas get to the market. The challenge kicked-off in March 2014 with three months for designers, architects, inventors, students, residents, builders and engineers to submit their ideas.

Finalists will compete for three support packages worth R500 000 each and students compete for three awards of R40 000 each. In October 2014 there will be an interactive showcase, to demonstrate the best innovations that was submitted. Here users will be able to vote for their favourite solution. The winners will be announced at the end of 2014 and a one or two year business support and development period will begin in 2015.
