Western Cape Sector Digital Disruption Impact Assessment

“Digital Disruption refers to the changes enabled by digital technologies that occur at a pace and magnitude that disrupts established ways of value creation, social interaction, doing business and more generally our thinking.”
The Western Cape Government (WCG), Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) recently commissioned some research into the impact of Digital Disruption on various economic sectors in the Western Cape.
The objective of this assessment is to understand the current impact of Digital Disruption on sectors and business in the Western Cape, and sector susceptibility to disruption. It informs the reader of the potential changes that might affect organisations, government and citizens, and provides areas of strategic response in order to address these challenges and opportunities from a policy perspective.
The Sector Digital Disruption Impact Assessment report provides an easy-reading analysis of the impacts of digital disruption on selected sectors of the Western Cape economy and is aimed at persons with a basic knowledge of the topic, wishing to understand broadly the issues giving rise of the 4th industrial revolution. It is not a geared to the technologists and IT professional.

Digitisation and digital transformation of sectors provide significant growth opportunities for the economy, but also raises some risks, if not recognised. Digital transformation enables sophistication of all services within the economy and thus improves human development and citizens’ lives. |
In a world which is increasingly digital, Western Cape-based citizens and businesses need to embrace digital opportunities in order to remain competitive in a rapidly changing world. Without a clear digital strategy, organisations risk losing their competitive advantage in an increasingly fast changing world. |

Through the understanding of the impact and transformation occurring and likely to occur across sectors, strategic responses are put forward that attempt to advise on how best to take advantage of the opportunities borne out of disruption, as well as mitigate against the risks associated with it.
