The WCG eCentre is bridging the ICT gap in Tulbagh

Exrernal view of Tulbagh eCentreTulbagh is a small farming community 121.4km from Cape Town. The town located in the Cape Winelands district is well-known for its numerous wineries. Tulbagh is mostly a farm-worker village strongly reliant on farm and factory employment. Most citizens in the community are farm workers that only work during the growing season. Others work for the local municipality, retail outlets, business owners and other employment sectors. Rhodes Food Group has a factory plant in Tulbagh, and this is where some of the citizens also work.

The Tulbagh WCG eCentre, which opened in 2016, is located near the entrance to Tulbagh. The community consist of a population of 8969, and the eCentre serves roughly 2535 members with approximately 22 394 user sessions. During the winter, people, including farm and factory workers, use the eCentre to look for work and educational possibilities. Regular users include learners, university students, and businesses.

By providing access to e-mail, the internet and various government services, the Tulbagh WCG eCentre helps the community. They are also community-focused and alert the citizens of new opportunities and provide guidance where necessary.

Tulbagh WCG eCentre hosted training for the children at Zanokhanyo Enrichment Centre, making a significant difference in their lives.

They had sessions every Wednesday to master the basics of computer use, and they were excited to learn something new each week. The eCentre staff cooperated with the Hands of Hope to surprise the children and their parents with the 'My first schoolbag' project during graduation. The children who attended the graduation received a school bag containing their school uniform and stationery. The biggest success story is the completion of training done by the eCentre, where citizens can improve their skills, find employment, and receive a promotion at work.
