Update: 12 July 2010

2011
(Western Cape Government)
The South African Police have reported that there was sporadic looting on 11 July in the Western Cape of shops owned by foreign nationals. Police have indicated that the situation is under control and that they are maintaining a high visibility in the most vulnerable areas.

The Provincial Government is monitoring the situation, together with Municipal Disaster Management Centres, and is providing information to the Police for follow-up. For example, the Province's Community Development Workers have been instrumental in providing information to authorities regarding what is happening on the ground. Provincial mediators were deployed to communities last week and will continue their efforts this week. Provincial and local government are on standby to provide humanitarian support, should this be required. The Provincial Disaster Management Joint Operations Centre (JOC) for the World Cup is still operational 24/7, as is the City's JOC and the SAP JOC. There is close coordination between the three JOCs.
