Reading statistics from the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) show that only 14% of the South African population are active book readers, and only 5% of parents read to their children. 

National Book Week 2014From Monday, 1 September to Sunday, 7 September 2014 the Department of Arts and Culture and will join hands with the SABDC to promote the value of reading through the annual National Book Week campaign.

During this week the SABDC will bring the fun and excitement of books directly to you, handing out over 9 000 new books in local languages. 

Book lovers can be on the look-out for the National Book Week bus that will travel from Johannesburg to Paarl to spread the love of reading to local libraries.

How can I get involved?

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with SABDC and the national Department of Arts and Culture, will host a satellite National Book Week Programme in the Paarl and Wellington area from 4 to 6 September.

If you in the Paarl area, you can join minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo at the National Book Week closing ceremony at Drakenstein Library.

During this week, schools, libraries and reading promotion projects are encouraged to celebrate reading and the magic of books.

Join your local library or search for your favourite book using our online library catalogue and experience the joy of reading.

If you have any overdue books, now would be a good time to return them. Take advantage of City’s Library and Information Services Department's fine-free week during National Book Week.
