Murraysburg Cape Access Centre is impacting the lives of the community

Summary

The Cape Access Programme in Murraysburg has made an impact on the lives of the community. Access to information and communication technologies (ICT) has brought with it an opportunity for personal growth and socio-economic upliftment.

Nestled in a valley in the Karoo, surrounded by the beautiful Sneeuberg Mountains on one sMurraysburg eCentreide and the Buffalo River and stunning Karoo scenery on the other, lies the village of Murraysburg.

The town is about 160 km from Beaufort West and 90 km from Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape. It is a hidden gem in the middle of the vast Karoo. Residents believe that Murraysburg captures the unspoilt essence of the Karoo and its wonderful people more than any other town in the region. Murraysburg relies on the agricultural industry, where most residents are employed.

Many of Murraysburg's approximately 5 000 residents lacked access to dependable internet. Recognising this demand the Murraysburg Cape Access Centre was established in 2008 to address the issue, by offering dependable internet access and basic computer training to the Murraysburg community.

The Murraysburg Cape Access Centre operates from the Thusong Service Centre. Here locals have access to e-mail, the internet, and various government services and it helps the citizens communicate with government and other communities more effectively. It is now an important part of the community and a steppingstone for many residents getting ready for the digital economy.
