Hermanus Hospital Upgrade
The Department of Transport and Public Works upgraded the Hermanus Hospital to improve its service delivery to the increasing Hermanus and Overstrand population.
The R68 million project started in January 2011 and was occupied by the Department of Health in April 2013.
- Paediatrics Ward.
- Five-bed First Stage Delivery Ward.
- Five-bed Kangaroo Facility.
- New Emergency Department which meant that the current Emergency Department could revert back to the dedicated Men's Ward.
Other New Features
- Main entrance and patient records.
- Outpatients department.
- Emergency unit.
- Bulk stores.
- Additional theatre and recovery area.
Innovative Interior and Exterior Design
The new design sees the departments placed into distinct zones along a new "hospital street" while colour and feature graphics of indigenous flora were used to assist patients and visitors find their way. The hospital features courtyards and skylights in the deeper plan areas to increase the use of natural light.
The department planted trees in the parking area to eventually provide shade while the physiotherapy exercise section is in a landscaped area which was not enclosed by walls.
Training and Job Creation
|Sixty labour candidates from the local community underwent training to obtain accredited certificates.||Twelve candidates were employed by the main contractor and two by the electrical sub-contractor.|
|Twenty-five candidates with building skills such as bricklaying, carpentry, painting, plumbing, etc. were enrolled with an accredited training agent for learnership training.||These candidates used the training for the duration of the contract.|
In addition, ten National Youth Services (NYS) learners were supervised and mentored by a dedicated onsite mentor and a Community Liaison Officer was appointed.
