    Who is Statistics South Africa?
    Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) is the national statistics agency of South Africa established under the Statistics Act (Act No. 6 of 1999) with the aim to produce timely, accurate and accessible official statistics.

    What is a Population Census?
    A population census is a total count of the country's population, where demographic, social and economic information, as well as information about the housing conditions of the people who live in the country, is gathered.

    Why Do We Need a Population Census?
    A population census is needed in order to assist government in planning, decision-making, monitoring and evaluation of programmes and policies. The data collected includes information regarding access to facilities, services, housing and living conditions.

    What are the Benefits of a National Population Census?
    Information collected will assist government and the private sector in their planning for education, health care, transport and other public programmes.

    When Will the National Population Census Take Place?
    The census takes place every five to ten years. The census is due to take place between 10 and 31 October 2011. The last census was held in 2001.

    Who Should Participate?
    Everyone in the country should participate in order to get the most accurate indication of the entire population.

    Will Information be Kept Confidential?
    The information that you disclose will be kept confidential and will not be shared with other research agencies or government structures. The Statistics Act provides for a fine of up to R10 000 or imprisonment of up to six months or both for any person found guilty of contravening the above-mentioned Act.

    How to Identify Census 2011 Field Workers

      Fieldworker:
    • Census 2011 ID Card with a photo, name, surname, ID No. and province details.
    • Stats SA black peak cap.
    • Reflective yellow bib (overshirt).
    • Yellow bag.
    • Official questionnaires.
