All things transport in October Transport Month

(Western Cape Government)

October Transport Month 2016

The Department of Transport and Public Works celebrates Transport Month during October every year.

The theme for October Transport Month 2016 is “Together we move South Africa forward”. This gives us the opportunity to showcase our transport-related career opportunities and educate communities about the importance of road safety.

This platform also allows us to profile recent transport infrastructure achievements, including major road construction projects in the Western Cape.

Building, repairing and upgrading provincial roads

Road works

Transport infrastructure received the biggest share of the Department’s 2016/17 budget. The allocated R3,15 billion is being used for many projects across the Western Cape. Two major road rehabilitation and widening projects are being undertaken in Cape Town on 7 km of the N2 between Borcherds Quarry and Swartklip Interchange, and on 9 km of the N1 between Plattekloof Road and Old Oak Interchange.

Road safety management and education

Our road safety programmes include education initiatives and awareness campaigns. Through our Safely Home campaign, we hope to drastically reduce the number of people killed and injured on the province’s roads.

For example, our award-winning First Kiss television commercial focused on the importance of passengers buckling up, even on short journeys.

Our road safety education programmes are customised to appeal to specific target markets. Our programmes include:
