Cape Town hosts Third Division Ice Hockey World Championship

16 April 2013

Some of the world’s best ice hockey players are competing in the 2013 Division III Ice Hockey World Championship at the GrandWest Ice Station in Cape Town. The championship started on Monday, 15 April and runs until Sunday, 21 April 2013.

The championship is being hosted by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), supported by South African (SA) Ice Hockey, the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Government and others.

Participating teams are all in the third division. Our national side will be playing against teams from Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, People’s Republic of Korea and the United Arab Emirates. Every team will play every other team once. The winner will be promoted to Division II.

On the first day, the People’s Republic of Korea beat United Arab Emirates 5–3, while Greece won 6–3 over Ireland. South Africa got its campaign off to a winning start with a 5–2 win over Luxembourg.

Ice hockey is a growing sport in South Africa, and local support would certainly give our players a much-needed boost. The games are bound to be extremely exciting and packed with action.

Tickets are available at Computicket – R30 for adults and R20 for under 16s. All games at 13:00 are free of charge and doors open at 12:00.
