A Proud Team Western Cape Spreads Cheer at League Finals

19 December 2012

The importance of team work brought Team Western Cape’s players and management together at the National School Sports Championship held in Pretoria from 10 to 15 December 2012. The team returned on Sunday, 16 December.

A total of 462 participants represented the Western Cape. They produced some thrilling performances in basketball, chess, cricket, football, gymnastics, netball, rugby and volleyball. The championship ended with a day of athletics and a fun run.

Team spokesperson Ms Doreen Slingers said the Western Cape campaign placed heavy emphasis on teaching participants values and discipline in order to prepare them for professional careers. “This championship was the first time that many participants had been able to compete at a national event. It was important for them to take a number of life lessons from the experience.”

Slingers said participants can all be proud of their performance at the event. “It’s always a great moment to represent your province, especially the Western Cape. The aim was mainly to enjoy the experience and draw as many positives from the tour as possible”, she said.

The team manager of the girls’ u17 development team from Manzomthombo Secondary School, Mr Frank Xaba, said his team came to learn. “We’re very grateful for this exposure and, as a team, we’re proud to have been part of Team Western Cape”. He said the highlight of the tour was when the netball teams sat together after the competition to discuss different styles of play. “We appreciate learning skills and knowledge from a more advanced team such as Stellenberg. That certainly made this experience worthwhile,” he said.

People from many different backgrounds came together to represent one province. The captain of the girls’ u17 cricket team of Brackenfell High School, Melanie Beck, said team members made new friends and were able to learn from each other.

Team Western Cape came to the championship to learn and left more complete than when it arrived. By playing and learning together for a week, the team showed that sport is growing in the province and that we all can be proud to wear the white and blue colours wherever we go.
