Museum and Community Act Against Abuse

28 November 2012

The Simon’s Town Museum is working together with the Ocean View Trauma Centre and members of the community to increase awareness of the abuse of women and children, and to build support for victims and survivors of abuse.

On Monday, 26 November 2012, the museum launched its annual 16 Days of Activism Awareness Programme using the theme, “Family Relationships”. The campaign runs until Friday, 4 December 2012.

As part of its practical outreach campaign, the museum is distributing pamphlets to visitors and has set up an information table on abuse. In the knowledge that “it is better to give than to receive”, the museum will also be collecting clothing, shoes and toiletries for the Red Cross Family Resource Centre to distribute to abused women and children.

Suzette Farmer, Education Officer of the Simon’s Town Museum, said the campaign aims to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable women and children through making people aware of abuse, and through motivating members of the public to act against abuse.
