Better Together Through Fly Fishing and Angling

26 October 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has formed a partnership with the Boland Fly Fishing Association (BFFA) and Western Province Fly Fishing Association (WPFA) to introduce fly fishing to communities in the Western Cape.

On Wednesday, 24 October 2012, introductory lessons on fly fishing were presented to the various regional offices of the Directorate: Sport Promotion at the Eikendal Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Learners from Somerset College, Paul Roos High and Gordon High assisted the staff members by offering basic casting and rod technique tips.

This event marked the introduction of an exciting new sports code to the Department. Mr Louis De Jager of BFFA said the aim was to bring the fly fishing to the attention of Department; a sport which can bring youths together around a constructive and enjoyable recreational activity.

Mr Colin Cedras of Club Development says the lessons gave participants a clear picture of the sport and some of its technical aspects. “The most important lesson of fly fishing is to learn to be patient”, he said.

Mr Charlton Nieuwoudt of the West Coast regional office also enjoyed the experience. In his view, “working in groups contributed to team building”.

On Tuesday, 13 November 2012, the Department will host a general show angling fishing event for youths from the Metro and West Coast regions in Langebaan. The aim is to bring youngsters together through sport.
