Celebrating Our Educational Heritage

27 September 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is committed to celebrate heritage by bringing learners and educators from different schools together.

On Wednesday, 26 September 2012, the Archives and Records Service partnered with the Centre for Conservation Education in Wynberg to host an educational heritage event. The event was structured around the theme, “Celebrating Our Educational Heritage”, and it was attended by about 200 learners from schools in Langa, Pinelands and Thornton.

The event provided the learners and educators with the opportunity to learn more on the historical background of their schools. Mr Siyabonga Ntamesi of the Archives and Records Service says that scanned records that could be used for a family tree was displayed for viewing. Pamphlets detailing the services rendered by the component were handed out.

The component celebrated Heritage Month with the community and various community organisations. On Saturday, 15 September 2012, the unit partnered with the South African St Helenian Heritage Association (Saints in South Africa) to display heritage exhibitions at the Square Hill Community Hall in Retreat.

The department reinvigorated the public’s interest in their own heritage. It can be celebrated and strengthened through meaningful partnerships. The Archives and Records Service performs an important function to indicate how heritage brings communities together.
