Inspirational Camps to Bring Youth Together

4 September 2012

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), will use sport and recreational activities to bring together youths between the ages of 14 and 25. The events, which will take the form of two regional camps and one provincial camp, are organised around the themes of social inclusion, leadership and national identity.

Students from the Boland and South Western district regions will attend the first camp at SOS Wild in Villiersdorp (31 August - 1 September 2012). Students from the West Coast and Metro regions will attend the second at Waterval in Tulbagh (7 - 9 September 2012). About 300 students from these two camps will then be selected for the provincial camp at the Steinthal Estate in Tulbagh (29 September - 6 October 2012).

This initiative is a response to the identification last year by National Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, of national youth camps as an important platform for the development of young people across the country.

The department believes that the camps have the potential to bring youths together through sport and recreation to empower them with values, soft skills and knowledge that can help them to develop into responsible and conscious adults.
