One Year to Go to 2010 FIFA World Cup Celebrations and FANJOL

11 June 2009
To celebrate the long awaited kick-off of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will be hosting a FANJOL in Plettenberg Bay on Sunday, 14 June 2009. Live screenings of the Confederations Cup opening ceremony and opening matches, Bafana Bafana vs. Iraq at 16H00 and New Zealand vs. Spain at 20H30, promise to provide action for football loving South Africans.

According to the Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Sakkie Jenner, "The FANJOL seeks to create a jovial atmosphere to promote national pride as communities will come together to support the national team in their opening game and generally share in the spirit of soccer. The FANJOLS also encourage those who are not able to buy tickets to experience the joy of seeing football "live". "

During the event, the 2010 Football Ambassadors will host coaching clinics with local youth as part of the developmental aspect of 2010. There will also be a range of activities, live entertainment and family fun.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is proud to hoist a 20 x 13m Bafana Bafana soccer jersey at the Provincial Legislature Building at 15 Wale Street. The jersey, a gigantic symbol of great national pride, demonstrates the Department's full support for the national team, and is branded "One Year to go to 2010". The celebrations also include a helicopter banner flown across the CBD between 13:00 -14:15 and 16:30 -17:30 along the N1 and N2 highways.
