Implementing the Language Policy in the Western Cape

4 February 2010

The Western Cape Language Committee and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will host a language colloquium on 09 February 2010 at the University of Western Cape. The colloquium aims to review the implementation of the Western Cape's Language Policy.

A survey conducted within government departments in 2008 and 2009 on the language status showed a clear need for further awareness amongst provincial departments and local government of the language policy and support to ensure effective implementation. The colloquium will focus on improving the language policy within the Western Cape government departments as well as review the impact that language has on effective access to government services.

The Western Cape Language Committee is tasked with the promotion of the equal status of the three official languages of the Western Cape, namely, English, IsiXhosa and Afrikaans as encapsulated in the Western Cape Language Policy and Language Act.

Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation in the Western Cape, Sakkie Jenner, says, "Language plays an important role in creating an identity and culture within any community. It brings about a sense of belonging and acceptance."
