Excitement builds as we count down to Netball World Cup

9 January 2023

Media statement by Minister Anroux Marais:

Today marks 200 days until the first match of the Netball World Cup 2023. We are exceptionally proud and excited to countdown to this tournament, as it will be hosted in Cape Town, and South Africa, for the first time in history.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has been working hard over the past three years to equip our province with world-class facilities and to ensure that the Western Cape province is ready to receive and host all the international players, support staff and fans who will travel to our province to support this tournament. We have also been working on legacy projects, which will ensure that communities across the Western Cape will have access to upgraded netball facilities after the conclusion of the tournament, so that we can continue growing netball in our province.

Women’s sport in the province is growing and we are very excited not only to host the Netball World Cup in July, but also selected matches of the T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup, which will be played at Newlands and Boland Park in February. As a build-up to the Netball World Cup, we are also hosting the Netball Quad series in Cape Town from 21-25 January, which will see South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and England competing in an exciting tournament. I hope to see our local crowds show up in numbers to support all these tournaments.

I would like to urge all people of the Western Cape to get behind our women’s teams and show their support. There is also an opportunity to register to volunteer at the Netball World Cup and those wishing to do so can visit: https://bit.ly/3ZgCaCO Let us all get involved and show the world that Cape Town is a world-class destination for major sporting events.
