On Friday, 19 August 2022, the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais will unveil the Provincial Heritage Site (PHS) plaque on a portion of Thornton road in Athlone. This site has been declared a PHS by Heritage Western Cape due to its significance as an important site of struggle during the 1980s. The Trojan Horse massacre, a horrific event which saw the loss of young lives as they fought for freedom, took place at this site.
As a declared PHS, the site will now be protected under the National Heritage Resources Act, 1999.
All members of the media are invited to attend the unveiling. Opportunities for photographs and interviews will be available.
