Premier Winde and Minister Marais launch Netball Fridays in the Western Cape

12 June 2022

On Friday, 10 June 2022, Premier Alan Winde and Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, together with Netball South Africa, officially launched Netball Fridays in the Western Cape as we count down to the 2023 Netball World Cup.

Netball Fridays encourages everyone to dress up in their supporter’s outfits every Friday to show their support for our SA team as the countdown to this prestigious event commences. The Western Cape is proud to be hosting this tournament next year and we encourage all the people of the province to join us as we celebrate Netball Fridays.

At the launch event, hosted at Leeuwenhof in Cape Town, Premier Winde encouraged his cabinet to join in a friendly game of netball against some of the provincial players from the Southern Stings and Tornadoes. Netball South Africa and the board members for the Netball World Cup were also present to celebrate the day.

Minister Marais said: “We are very excited to be hosting the 2023 Netball World Cup as this will bring renewed interest in the sport but also an economic boost to the province. I hope that everyone in the Western Cape will join us in building up to the tournament and that we will all come out in numbers to support our Proteas team in the tournament.”

Premier Winde said: “For the very first time in the Netball World Cup's history, it will be taking place on the African continent, and we in the WC will represent South Africa by hosting it! This is a massive achievement for us and it was great to be a part of #NetballFriday today as we gear up for the World Cup. The World Cup enables us to drive economic growth and promote private sector-led job creation. This is because our tourism and hospitality sectors thrive during international events. We look forward to welcoming athletes and spectators to our province!”

We look forward to seeing the people of the Western Cape showing their support for the tournament.
