We mourn the loss of a great contributor to the arts, Marilyn Martin

23 May 2022

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of the internationally renowned art expert, Marilyn Martin.

Marilyn was a former head of the Iziko National Art Museum in Cape Town. She was later appointed as the head of the art collections at Iziko Museums. She curated many art exhibitions and also wrote extensively on art for a variety of publications. She later shared her knowledge of the arts through her work as a lecturer in art history at the University of Cape Town.

Minister Marais said: “Marilyn was an extremely knowledgeable figure in the art environment. Her work contributed greatly to the rich and varied art scene in Cape Town. She shared her passion and love for art through curating exhibitions and later through teaching her students. We are grateful for the contribution that she has made to arts and culture in the province.”

Our condolences go out to Marilyn’s family, friends and all those who worked with her. Her legacy will live on through her work in the arts sector and through the work of her students.
