Opportunity for youth to gain work experience at museums
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, through its YearBeyond Programme, has been working to offer unemployed youth in the province opportunities to gain work experience and to increase their chances of finding full-time employment. We call on youth between the ages of 18 and 25 to apply for our newest initiative: the Placemakers Programme.
This new programme offers youth the chance to be placed at a local museum and to assist the museum service with collecting memories and experiences of people through storytelling events, memory mapping and oral history initiatives. Young people on the programme will also have the opportunity to work in customer care roles to enhance visitor experiences to the museums.
This is the newest stream in the YearBeyond programme, following on the successful @Home learning, Academic, Scouting in Schools, 1000 Stories Library project, ICT Cadet and Violence Prevention Initiative streams.
Minister Anroux Marais said: “I encourage young people in our province to apply for this opportunity. We want to support our unemployed youth to get some work experience and to enhance their CV’s to increase their chances of becoming independent and economically active.”
Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 25 and should live close to one of the participating museums (list can be found at https://www.yearbeyond.org/placemakers-programme). Applications may be done via the YearBeyond website and close on 30 May 2022.
