Western Cape Government mourns the passing of Fred Mouton

5 May 2022

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of the legendary cartoonist, Fred Mouton.

Fred Mouton has been entertaining South African readers with his cartoons for more than 50 years. He was the cartoonist for Die Burger for just over 52 years, and was only the third cartoonist for the newspaper since its inception. He also drew for a variety of other publications. His sharp wit and social commentary were always reflective of his intelligence and keen observation of what was happening in our country.

Minister Anroux Marais said: “Fred Mouton was truly a giant in our South African media landscape. His unique style and witty commentary entertained people across the country on a daily basis. He truly knew how to reflect the news in an entertaining manner, while still commenting on the daily reality of many South Africans. His contribution to the field of journalism was immense and is reflected in the accolades he received during his career.”

Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and all those who worked with him over the years. He was a true icon and his legacy will long live on through his drawings.
