DCAS supported Freedom Paddle takes place safely

26 October 2020

The third annual Freedom Paddle took place in Table Bay on Saturday 24 October 2020, with 250 paddlers from around the Western Cape taking part.

The surski race usually takes place on Freedom Day, 27 April, but was postponed this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thanks to the support of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the Cape Town Canoeing Federation was able to host a fully compliant and safe event this past weekend.

Nicolette Pietersen, the Deputy Director for Sport Promotion at DCAS, said it was encouraging to see sport once again taking place.

“The DCAS is proud to support this event during this time, with the pandemic being uppermost in our minds, it is great to see our local athletes and athletes from other provinces participating at the event, which adds to the economy of the Western Cape. It is great to see sport being played and people observing the Covid-19 protocols,” she said.

As usual, the 27 kilometre course saw competitors depart from the Oceana Power Boat Club in Granger Bay, paddle all the way around Robben Island and then back to shore.

This year the race was won by Josh Fenn and South African paddling legend Hank McGregor.
