As sector reopens, Minister Marais visited Togryers museum to engage on readines

27 August 2020

Yesterday, Minister Anroux Marais visited the Togryers Museum in Ceres, one of the many museums reopened across the province following national government’s approval of their compliance to the mandatory health protocols now to be instituted.

Joined by Mayor Barnito Klaasen, Minister Anroux Marais engaged with Museum Manager, Bertdene Laubcher on their experiences under the lockdown regulations to ascertain how best we can assist in the recovery phase. Minister Marais was encouraged to hear that although feet through the door have been relatively slow since opening last week, the museum’s conference facility serves as a great hook for attracting new visitors as shared by the staff during Minister's visit yesterday.

Minister Marais said, “Our Provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has been working around the clock to assist our affiliated museums with compiling the necessary operational plans and provided these museums with the needed PPE to adhere to all health precautions. This was done to ensure that affiliated museums comply with the national regulations and are able to open safely to the public. With some restrictions now relaxed under Alert level 2, we can now safely explore the best the Western Cape has to offer and each do our part to restore the local economy devastated by lockdown regulations.”

We are happy to announce that in addition to the Togryers Museum, the following five (5) affiliated museums recently received permission to reopen:

  • Caledon Museum
  • Huguenot Memorial Museum (Franschhoek)
  • Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum
  • Shipwreck Museum (Bredasdorp)
  • Stellenbosch Museum

Several other affiliated museums are further awaiting permission to reopen and we will inform the public once this is granted. Museums play a vital role in the conservation of our collective heritage through collections, research, exhibitions and educational programmes while boosting cultural tourism across the province. We encourage all to visit their local museums to learn more about our rich cultural heritage landscape and at the same time support the many economic opportunities to which it lends itself.
