Media Alert: Minister Meyer Highlights African Traditional Medicine Week at Cape Medical Museum

23 August 2011

On Wednesday, 24 August 2011, Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape, will be visiting the Cape Medical Museum in Green Point to highlight African Traditional Medicine Week.

African Traditional Medicine Week runs from 22 to 28 August 2011 and, according to a national government website: "Traditional African medicine is a holistic discipline involving the use of indigenous herbalism combined with aspects of African spirituality. About 80% of Africa's population relies on traditional medicine for their basic health needs. In some cases, traditional medicine is the only healthcare service available, accessible and affordable to many people on the continent. In this case, the significant contribution of traditional medicine as a major provider of healthcare services in Africa cannot be underestimated."

The museum also has a Sangoma Medicine Display, which shows how traditional medicine knowledge has influenced Western medicine.

All media are invited to attend.
